Untitled is an early painting from Wei Guangqing’s iconic Red Wall series. In this work, Wei reappropriates an illustration on the proper manner of hosting a party (宴客切勿流連), taken from the moral teachings of Zhu Bolu, a Confucian scholar during the Qing dynasty. The painting embraces the stylistic language of pop art; a red wall is amplified as the prominent visual motif that foregrounds Zhu’s message, vibrant red is juxtaposed with muddy yellow tones, bold borders are featured, and there is flattened spatial depth. With all these elements, Untitled recontextualises Eastern philosophy with Western post-modern aesthetics. The work represents Wei’s conscious intention of positioning opposing concepts of past and present, and figurative and abstract, in order to provoke multiple readings of contemporary society, popular culture, and consumerism.
