Reservoir Series—Future Highway II (Xiamen)水庫系列──未來天橋II(廈門)
2007
This photograph depicts a row of houses being destroyed in order to forcefully evict squatters and make way for a highway in Xiamen, one of China’s first Special Economic Zones. The presence of the workers on the roof creates an enigmatic relationship between construction and destruction. Trained as a designer, Bas Princen uses the camera as a tool to investigate spatial phenomena. His work blends elements together in images that collapse objects and contexts or create ambiguity between the natural and the artificial. He focuses primarily on buildings, landscapes, and infrastructure, often depicting humans’ impact on territories, whether through construction, demolition, or appropriation.
