This photograph depicts the giant mounds of sand reserved for construction in Beijing in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. The games involved the construction of major architectural projects in an area that came to be known as the Olympic Park. Trained as a designer, Bas Princen uses the camera as a tool to investigate spatial phenomena. His work blends elements together in images that collapse objects and contexts or create ambiguity between the natural and the artificial. He focuses primarily on buildings, landscapes, and infrastructure, depicting humans’ impact on territories, whether through construction, demolition, or appropriation.
