The original concept for Zheng’s work was inspired by the transnational economy of Yangjiang’s manufacturing industry. After local samples were produced, manufacturers connected with international buyers through Hong Kong to sell their products overseas. Zheng transformed the exhibition space into a display room for kitchenware samples from Yangjiang and pasted his email correspondences with curator Hou Hanru regarding the work on wooden slatwall panels. By including modern digital communication and turning the creative art space into a simulated site for economic activity, Zheng’s work not only blurs the boundaries between life and art, reality and fiction, it also reveals the international economic flow within a globalised landscape. This simple sample display room is emblematic of how Chinese companies have established large, transnational markets and networks for ‘Made in China’ goods through telecommunications.
