SEA STATE 5: drift (rope sketch) depicts the subtle movement of a long rope floating in the ocean. The piece begins with a tight, aerial shot on the rope and slowly zooms out to reveal the rope in its entirety. Charles Lim continues to draw back, distancing our view so that the object appears increasingly smaller until it nearly disappears. In the final five seconds, the shot cuts to an indistinguishable ship in the distance.
This video is part of Lim’s ongoing body of work, begun in 2004, entitled SEA STATE, which investigates Singapore’s maritime geography and history and how systems of the sea act as counterpoints to what takes place on land—politically, socially, and culturally. The series draws upon Lim’s intimate knowledge of the sea, including his experience as an Olympic sailor, and his deep interest in natural and human-made bodies of water.
