Yu Hong developed this work, part of the She series, from her field research on the daily lives of women in China, a project that serves as an exploration of the collective female experience. Her approach is novel, offering the perspectives of both the artist and the subject by juxtaposing a painting with personal photographs selected by the subject.

Yu Hong (born 1966, Xian) graduated from the Oil Painting Department, Central Academy of Fine Arts, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1988 and completed her postgraduate studies in 1996. In addition to photography, she works on canvas, silk, and resin with oil, pastel, and fabric paints. Her work reflects the social, cultural, and political changes taking place in China, and their effects on the everyday experiences and challenges of women. Yu lives and works in Beijing.
