Silopolis features eccentric characters in a string of outrageous scenarios. Combining animations with scripted performance, the work begins with a group of four people in office attire, travelling in a car. Throughout the trip, the leader of the group commands his team to perform absurd tasks, such as eating dogs in a desert and horse-riding on a snow-covered mountain. The adventures of the group are juxtaposed with the journey of a lost couple, who are brought to a hotel and forced to give up their treasured possessions. Angered by the humiliating treatment of his wife by the hotel staff, the husband eventually commits suicide. The final scene closes with a priest-like figure lying in a casket alongside the dead body of the man, asserting provocatively that he loves death.
Erkka Nissinen’s use of simple computer graphics as scenic backdrops adds to this work’s wry, bizarre humour. Revealing a world of perverse social interactions, Silopolis explores the absurdity of modern life and human existence.
