Sinking Mercedes-Benz into Yellow River將梅賽德斯-奔馳沉入黃河
1997
Mercedes Benz entered the Chinese market in the 1980s and became a symbol of wealth and new economic power. The painting shows the car suspended from a crane over the Yellow River, the ‘mother river’ of Chinese civilisation. Not only does it flow past important historical sites, its frequent flooding also stands testimony to the indomitable spirit of the people in the face of disaster over the centuries and their belief that unity is strength. Zhao Bandi used computer technology to create this metaphoric scene where China’s communal, socialist spirit directly encounters an object of consumerist desire.
