This misshapen object is one of several homespun objects made to guard parking spots, which Phinthong found on the streets of Bangkok and which he considers to be ‘sculptures’. Its function is made evident by the handwritten Thai script that reads, ‘Please do not block the driveway’. In his ‘social sculpture’ series, Phinthong lifts objects directly from the street and places them in a gallery setting. In doing so, he brings attention to the ways in which random objects—in this case a stack of bricks wrapped in paper and plastic, created by a city resident—are used to occupy or stake out private areas within public space. The items Phinthong selects are all unique and handmade by unknown makers, and are embedded with a social value and function that are rooted in the urban informality of Bangkok.
