Spirited, like a far-journeying steed; floating, like a duck on water昂昂若千里之駒 泛泛若水中之鳧
2002
One of the most celebrated artists working exclusively in calligraphy today, Tong Yang-Tze invented her own style, which accentuates the spirit of the line, the foremost quality in calligraphy, while simultaneously pushing calligraphy to the verge of abstraction. She writes verses from Chinese classics or Buddhist scriptures that she finds relevant to contemporary conditions. Tong pays homage to poet Qu Yuan (343–278 B.C.) in this phrase taken from the Song of Chu, in which Qu offers wilfull self-consolation amidst societal and moral decline. Tong urges her viewers to uphold their integrity in trying times, to aspire to be a defiant, ‘far-journeying steed’ rather than a complacent, ‘floating duck’.
