The Shanghai-born artist Hsiao Chin lived and travelled extensively throughout Europe and the United States beginning in 1955, and his work synthesises Eastern and Western aesthetic principles. He strove to reflect Eastern spiritual values through compositional balance and the use of symbols that are legible across cultures. Tension—IX, with its primary colours and architectonic structure, demonstrates this commitment.
Hsiao’s Tension series was created between 1967 and 1971, when the artist was teaching in New York. It reflects his absorption of contemporary trends in American art as well as the development of his minimalist style and ongoing experiments with geometric abstraction. Tension—IX features aspects of hard-edge abstraction such as irregular canvases and colour fields in primary hues. The opacity and gravity of this acrylic painting contrast with Hsiao’s brushy, calligraphic works in ink.
