The Terrazzo series is an early body of work by Wang Guangle. The title refers to the composite material commonly used for floor treatments in socialist China. The seemingly abstract pattern in this work is in fact a realist depiction of the tiled floors of Wang’s childhood home. He painted every pebble in detail, even sanding the surface of the canvas as one would do to polish a terrazzo floor. The minimalist yet photographic quality and the time-consuming approach probe the boundary between realism and abstraction and reflect the artist’s investigation into Western modernist art. Wang is best known for his meticulous, process-based canvases that examine time and the physical act of painting; his artistic style is unusual among artists of his generation.
