Hu Liu is known for her monochromatic drawings that attempt to capture the sublime experience of space within our environments. To add depth to a composition, Hu used graphite pencil to layer lines on paper, in a process that can take several months to complete. Here, a dark smooth plane rises to meet the light grey space above, forming a sharp horizon that delineates the earth and the cloudless sky. This immersive drawing of a vast mountain plays with the aesthetic possibilities of black, white, and grey, giving the illusion of an endless plane. Taking a contemplative approaching to drawing, Hu reduced the composition into its simplest elements, focusing her process on the intensity of tone and line.
