The Earth is a mixed-media painting featuring Lui Chun-kwong’s signature abstract style known as Yi Liu Shan Shui (ever-flowing landscape). A linear background of vertical stripes in white, black, light umber, and brown ochre is divided by a band of horizontal stripes of the same palette, creating a disorienting effect. The multiple layers of loose impasto brushwork and muted colours evoke the rough textures and subtle hues of nature, specifically of agricultural land. Lui’s iterative process of repeated lines is both a poetic device to convey the balancing forces of nature, and a method to create a sense of rhythm in the work. The artist has honed his skills in creating abstract compositions since the 1980s, attempting to push beyond the boundaries of representational painting. For Lui, the repetition in his paintings is a form of personal meditation and the works are windows into his inner world.
