The Instant belongs to a series of works on paper in which José María Sicilia explores the intersection of sound, visual art, and nature through bird songs. The graphic lines and shapes, transcribed from sonographs of bird song recordings from around the world, are essentially imprints of nature. This work contains materials he collected in Japan between 2011 and 2013, in particular the sound of crows before and after the earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima. To Sicilia, bird songs are made up of,‘instants with no duration, [their] duration is being’. Furthermore, the crow sounds can be read as omens, bestowing on this delicate work an especially somber tone reflective of Sicilia’s ongoing exploration of human existence and time.
