This work is based on a true historical incident. The two figures with featureless faces are Chu Anping, a famous liberal intellectual and chief editor of Literary Times in 1935, and his wife Duanmu Luxi. Chu was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution and subsequently disappeared. Rumour had it that he became a sheep farmer. The two sheep here, however, are Dolly, the cloned sheep that caused a sensation in 1997, and her surrogate mother. Bringing together historical hearsay, memory, and imagination, Qiu Xiaofei combines and reorganises otherwise unrelated images in his painting.
