The Shape of History is a video documenting a performance by Hong Kong artist Pak Sheung Chuen. Filmed in Turin, it shows the artist standing in the Po River with a stone column emerging from the water’s surface. Pak dips his fingers in the water and draws on the column, gradually wetting the entire exposed area. In his practice, Pak focuses on everyday life, objects, and situations, in small, temporary interventions. His performances are a means of self-exploration and self-expression, generally conducted without an audience and communicated to viewers through video, photographs, or text. The Shape of History is related to The Eternal Triangle, a work Pak performed two days earlier at the Po, involving the transfer of water from one point to another. Both performances have a strong meditative component, using seemingly pointless actions to define a poetic relationship with time and nature.
