Through performance, sculptural objects, and conceptual work, Yoko Ono explores multifaceted female experience. In Touch Me, she cuts a white canvas into the shape of a cross, making a two-dimensional surface three-dimensional. The work was created as part of Ono’s exhibition Touch Me at Galerie Lelong in New York, in which a large canvas covering an entire wall was cut multiple times. Visitors were encouraged to insert parts of their bodies into the cuts. This experience, along with the title, alludes to the position and vulnerability of female bodies in society. The work’s participatory dimension aligns with central concerns in Ono’s career, placing viewers in a relationship with one another and with the artist.
