Wang Yin hired local artisans to paint red-crowned cranes, pine trees, and other decorative motifs from traditional Chinese landscape painting. These elements are juxtaposed with high-rises, signal towers, and cars to present an ideal modern lifestyle that is at once flamboyant and down-to-earth. A large figure with a blurred face and silhouette sits in the foreground overseeing the landscape. This work represents a return to Western rustic oil painting that was first introduced in China in the early 1900s. Its mix of subjects and styles shows the continued contention between Western and Chinese visual language.
