In this photograph, five adolescent girls look out from a viewing spot on a lush green hill. Dressed in identical white shirts and red skirts, four sit on the parapet, and one stands behind, pointing in the distance. With their backs turned towards the viewer, they gaze across the blue sea, towards the clouds on the horizon of the clear blue sky. This photograph is part of Weng Fen’s Staring at the Sea series, which features families or groups of schoolgirls looking at the sea, often in natural settings with cliffs or greenery. Here, the juxtaposition of the vast sea and the group indicate the magnitude of nature, and the calm sea and clear sky evoke a sense of serenity. Weng’s work often combines landscapes and human figures. This series was developed alongside two other photographic series, On the Wall and Bird’s Eye View, which are set in Chinese cities. While similar in their portrayal of schoolgirls turned away from the viewer, the subjects of On the Wall and Bird’s Eye View look out at the urban landscape in a manner that suggests quiet contemplation or anxiety.
