Unlike his contemporaries who conceptualised art as a form of political discourse in China through the 1990s, Ji Dachun grounded his practice in exploring the absurd. Untitled is one of Ji’s more playful paintings, featuring a purple cartoonish depiction of faecal matter that appears to float in the centre of a square, beige background. In Ji’s semi-abstract paintings like this one, time and plot are eliminated. Viewers are invited to come up with their own version of how this bizarre scene unfolds. The comical work follows the Surrealist tradition of portraying a strange reality, in which hierarchical power structures are dissolved. Through its scatological humour, the work perhaps suggests that the human situation is essentially absurd and devoid of purpose.
