The monumental, intricate canvas Untitled (Intimate Suffering #13) presents a labyrinth in black and white, manifesting Kim Beom’s interest in questions of perception and illusion. After decades of experimenting with everyday objects and photographic images, Kim returned to painting on canvas with a series of works titled Intimate Suffering. In an extremely labour-intensive process, Kim painted a series of lines at right angles, transforming the surface into a maze. For the artist, the visual puzzle is a metaphor for the challenges we face in life and the human instinct to find solutions to overcome problems.
