Gazing intently at the white expanse of the canvas and faint traces, you can make out the silhouette of a landscape. Qiu Shihua uses barely perceptible strokes and layers of diluted oil paint to portray, in the simplest way possible, the shape, contrast, and colour of the scenery. In doing so, he creates a visual effect that oscillates between form and formlessness. The landscape shimmers into view then fades into obscurity, echoing the Taoist philosophy that all things are in a never-ending cycle of life and death.
Qiu Shihua (born 1940, Sichuan) trained in traditional Chinese landscape ink painting at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts. His signature style drifts between traditional Chinese ink painting and western landscape painting. Qiu lives and works in Shenzhen.
