Though this seemingly empty canvas evokes elements of abstraction and minimalism, it employs the Taoist concept of nothingness rather than referencing Western art history. The meditative quality of Qiu Shihua’s practice calls for patience from the viewer before the figurative landscape—featuring drifting clouds, trees, and riverbanks—appears behind the veil of white. Qiu trained in traditional landscape ink painting, but after a visit to France in the 1980s he developed a disciplined approach that fuses elements of impressionism and Taoism to create canvases that drift between Western scenery and Chinese landscape conventions.
