Utopian Machine is Zhou Xiaohu’s satirical depiction of propagandistic news broadcasts. With distorted sounds that mimic the news, clay figurines appear to re-enact political bureau speeches made at assembly meetings for historic events, such as the September 11 terrorist attack in New York. Zhou’s video also features clay replicas of iconic architectural landscapes including Xintiandi in downtown Shanghai, and the site where the First Congress of the Chinese Communist party was held. The work touches upon a range of weighty subjects, including civil liberties and political instability. Like many of Zhou’s animations, reality is reconfigured and imbued with humour and irony.
