A pioneer video artist, Shigeko Kubota invented cutting-edge post-production methods and special effects. She was also renowned for fusing landscape and natural forms with technology.
Video Installations 1970–1994 features a selection of her colourful and dynamic video sculptures presented in a gallery setting. Pissing Boy (1993) is displayed on screens affixed to a sculpture resembling a robot. Niagara Falls (1985–1987) features a witty assemblage of images of waterfalls. Finally, a section of the video highlights the influence of Marcel Duchamp on Kubota’s work, where, for example, Bicycle Wheel (1983) sees Kubota re-appropriate the French American artist’s iconic readymade work of 1913 with a metal bicycle wheel embedded with a miniature video monitor.
