Hidai Nankoku’s works since the 1950s followed the brushwork of conventional calligraphy yet rejected any use of characters. The depictions in Work 63–12, referring to the year and sequence of production, resemble radicals in ChineseorJapanese characters butdonotin fact match any. Hidai treated the paper with resin to reduce ink absorption and revealed the effects of the brush dragging on the surface, especiallyatthe pointsofpressure where a marbling effect of the ink becomes visible. The work bringstothe forefrontthe process of making marks and the presence of the calligrapher.
