In Xiao Niao, Xiao Yu gives over control of the camera to his eighteen-month-old son. The baby plays inside an exhibition space, filming at unconventional angles and often turning the lens onto himself. At one point he urinates on the gallery floor, an episode that perhaps informs the video’s title, which is a Chinese slang term for ‘penis’. The soundtrack of birds and distorted conversations adds an otherworldly element to this raw, visceral work.
