Yesterday is one of four videos made for Hong Kong Inter-vivos Film Festival (2012), an imaginary film festival created by Ho Sin Tung. Shot on black-and-white video, Ho’s intimate, dimly lit scene captures a woman’s hands caressing a young man’s face with his eyes closed. The two performers are acquainted in real life, contrary to the woman’s gesture of getting to know a seemingly new face. With a flashlight that follows the searching movements of the hands, Ho explores the nature of memory and its close relationship to imagination. This work also suggests that the process of navigating and imagining a fictional world often requires one to open the senses.
