Glamorous Boys of Tang:
Redux

M+ Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival presents ‘Glamorous Boys of Tang Redux’, a programme that revisits the 1985 homoerotic fantasy and cult classic ‘Glamorous Boys of Tang’ directed by Chiu Kang-Chien.

Through the work of contemporary Taiwanese video artist Su Hui-yu (b. 1976), this programme revisits the 1985 homoerotic fantasy and cult classic Glamorous Boys of Tang, directed by Chiu Kang-Chien (1940–2013), a poet and screenwriter best known for the critical successes Rouge (1987) and Full Moon in New York (1989). Set in the Tang dynasty, Glamorous Boys pushed the boundaries of cinematic decorum with scenes of violence-tinged orgiastic sex in wildly anachronistic costumes and sets.

Impressed by images in the film’s poster as a child, Su Hui-yu came across Chiu’s script some three decades later and realised that his original vision was still more elaborate and fantastical. Armed with technologies and creative freedoms unavailable to Chiu, Su set out to ‘remake’ Glamorous Boys and surface its subconscious omissions and repressed desires.
