Space Enter Shift:
A Round-Table Discussion with Jieun Cho, Larissa Sansour, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Xu Bing
This panel brings together artists Jieun Cho (ikkibawiKrrr), Larissa Sansour, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Xu Bing to discuss their outstanding careers and shared interest in space as a conceptual and formal framework in their art. Working across regions and continents, their practices are defined by deep and precise investigations into spatial phenomena and their potentials and configurations. Informed by personal insights and sharp observations of humanity’s evolution amid global geopolitics and digitally networked societies, the discussion unpacks how experiences of contemporary spaces are inevitably linked to power, capital, and technology. The artists will also offer perspectives on alternative ways of communal living.
Xu’s decades-long sociological experiments on spectatorship and the fourth wall—its deconstruction and alienation through lens-based recordings and transmissions—reached a new dimension when he took over an active satellite to produce and stream images in outer space. Sansour’s moving image works, grounded in Middle Eastern sociopolitical history and her own experience of exile, pair stunning visuals with poignant narratives that evoke imaginary spaces and alternate futures. ikkibawiKrrr’s research into pan-Asian histories and landscapes, shaped by colonialism and rapid modernisation, reclaims more peaceful and equitable ways of living together, devoid of capitalistic greed. Tiravanija’s projects cultivate social experiences through architecture, text, film, and play, foregrounding the connections among all beings and things and creating meaning through shared contexts and interactions.
This panel will be moderated by Silke Schmickl, CHANEL Senior Curator, Head of Moving Image, M+. Speakers will participate in English, Korean, and Mandarin. Simultaneous interpretation in English will be available.
