A hit man (Leon Lai) who wants out, experiences feelings for his contact (Michelle Reis) whom he has never met. She turns out to be just as obsessed with him. Later, he meets a hysteric (Karen Mok) claiming to be his old flame and crosses paths with a mute named Ho Chi-mo (Takeshi Kaneshiro) who sneaks into shops and runs businesses after hours. Ho falls for a lovelorn girl (Charlie Yeung) who never stops talking. The cinematography captures the alienation and longing in the city, with its hypnotic neon glow and maze of streets, stalls, and shops, while crystallising the nightscape of Hong Kong in the 1990s.

Lee was one of the cinematographers who joined in the midst of the shoot when Wong’s usual partner Christopher Doyle became unavailable. Although he was uncredited in Fallen Angels, Lee was once again asked to join the production of Wong’s In the Mood for Love (2000) years later.

The film will be presented in its 4K restoration.

The screening on 28 November will be followed by a talk with Mark Lee Ping-Bing. This talk will be held in Mandarin.

Wong Kar Wai (b. 1958, Shanghai) moved to Hong Kong when he was five. He was recognised as one of the most promising filmmakers with his first feature film, As Tears Go By in 1988. His works competed at Cannes, including Happy Together (1997), which won him Best Director; In the Mood for Love (2000); 2046 (2004); and My Blueberry Nights (2007). The Grandmaster (2013) that followed was the opening film of Berlin Film Festival that year. His most recent TV series Blossoms Shanghai (2023) was also a hit in China.
