Tempting Heart
Directed by Sylvia Chang, Tempting Heart follows filmmaker Cheryl (Sylvia Chang) as she develops a screenplay based on her own youth in the 1970s. The story centres on the romance between teenagers Sheo-Rou (Gigi Leung) and Ho-Jun (Takeshi Kaneshiro), whose fates intertwine with Sheo-Rou’s best friend, Chen Li (Karen Mok).
What begins as a familiar romantic drama gradually develops deep emotional complexity, evolving across several decades into a moving meditation on memory, life, and personal growth. Mark Lee Ping-Bing’s cinematography is vital to this transition. His intuitive use of natural light translates a profound warmth and intimacy, while his mastery of soft colour textures and specific amber hues beautifully distinguishes the changing eras. Through Lee’s lens, the film masterfully conjures the hazy, melancholic texture of a remembered past.
