Cici Wu’s Picks
Cici Wu creates complex, sensory, and dreamlike investigations into our cultural and material environment using video, drawing, sculpture, writing, and installation. Combining historical research and material experimentation with an acute sensitivity to sociopolitical structures, Wu’s works aim to explore and interrupt dominant narratives on a multitude of subjects, including memory, cinematic history, nationalism, cultural belonging and identity, and interpersonal relationships between humans and non-humans.
In this special screening, Wu will present her 2019 film Unfinished Return of Yu Man Hon from the M+ Collection, followed by a compilation of short films that have influenced her creative practice. The screening will be followed by a talk in English, where the audience will be given a rare opportunity to hear from the artist herself. The talk will be moderated by Silke Schmickl, CHANEL Lead Curator, Moving Image, M+.

About the Artist
Cici Wu (b. 1989, Beijing) is a New York-based mixed media artist who grew up in Hong Kong. She works with video, film, drawing, installation, sculpture, found objects, and elements of deconstruction in cinematic tradition to address and reveal the invisible links between social and individual microhistories, memories, spiritualities, and cultural belief systems. She received her Bachelor of Art in Creative Media from the City University of Hong Kong, and her Master of Fine Art in Sculpture from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, United States. She has had solo exhibitions at 47 Canal, New York (2021, 2018) and Empty Gallery, Hong Kong (2023, 2019), and has participated in several group exhibitions internationally, as well as the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale (2021) and the Yokohama Triennial (2020). She recently presented a solo exhibition with invited collaborators at Hordaland kunstsenter, Norway (2023).
