The End
How does a filmmaker tell a story about the last survivors of Earth’s environmental collapse? As a post-apocalyptic musical, of course. Featuring a stellar cast and tunes inspired by Hollywood’s Golden Age musicals, The End follows an ultra-wealthy family in their 25th year of life in their subterranean mansion, marked by enforced luxury, cheer, and routine. Born into these palatial confines is the son (George MacKay), now a young man who busies himself with writing a hagiographic account of his former energy tycoon father (Michael Shannon) and caring for masterpiece paintings collected by his mother (Tilda Swinton). When a girl (Moses Ingram) suddenly stumbles into their bunker, their life of perfected oblivion begins to fray.
Known for his award-winning documentaries The Act of Killing (2012) and The Look of Silence (2014), Joshua Oppenheimer creates a timely and portentous tale of humanity in his fiction film debut. Far from a simplistic satire of contemporary society, post-truths, and those who pursue self-interest to its destructive conclusion, The End reckons with collective guilt and self-deception to recognise delusion from reality, and for humanity—even at the end of the world—to find a way towards acceptance, empathy, and a capacity for change.
