Wong Tung and Partners Project Archives 王董建築師事務有限公司項目檔案

The Wong Tung and Partners Project Archives contains 221 objects covering four architectural projects based in Hong Kong - Mei Foo Sun Cheun (circa 1965–1978) the Sheraton Hotel (1969–1974) in Tsim Sha Tsui; Taikoo Shing (1977–1988); and Hong Kong Park (circa 1991). The material comprises architectural drawings, photography, books and periodicals, video and ephemera.

Wong Tung & Partners was founded in Hong Kong in 1963 by Shanghai-born Americans Bill Wong and Albert Tung. The company made its mark internationally in the late 1960s when it was commissioned to master plan and design Mei Foo Sun Chuen (circa 1965–1978). Comprising 99 blocks of 20-storey apartments for over 80,000 residents built on a disused Mobil petroleum storage site, Mei Foo Sun Chuenwas a pioneering private housing development for Hong Kong, and internationally, in terms of its scale, scope and planning concepts. It was at the time the world’s largest residential estate and Hong Kong’s first self-contained residential community in which accommodation and complete services – shops, open space and recreational facilities – were stitched together via an elevated continuous podium.

Mei Foo Sun Chuen influenced the subsequent design of many of Hong Kong’s public housing estates and was an early example demonstrating how Hong Kong had emerged as an “urban lab” where high-density and high-rise visions from elsewhere – akin to the Modernist schemes of Le Corbusier and others—were played out. Mei Foo Sun Chuen was also highly influential in the design of Wong Tung’s subsequent large-scale community developments like Taikoo Shing (1977–1988).

Wong Tung is also known for its hotel developments and the Sheraton Hotel (1969-1974) included in this collection was the first such project for Wong Tung. Built at a time when the Hong Kong government sought to boost its tourism infrastructure after the economic and political crisis of the late 1960s, the Sheraton was Hong Kong’s first atrium hotel.

The Wong Tung and Partners Project Archives were donated by Wong Tung & Partners Limited in 2013.
