Li Huasheng’s painting of grids began in 1998, when he left behind a successful career ofliterati-style paintings to pursuetotal abstraction.Completed in February 1999, this painting is are cord of th emoment-to-moment fluctuations of his immediate experience. Lines were drawn instinctually until the ink ran dry; they intersect and occasionally overlap, creating intense knots that sporadically appear throughout the composition. With the most basic tools and vocabulary, Li transferred his inner thoughts to paper—making a landscape painting oft he mind—and literally visualised the idea off ullnessin traditional inkp ainting.
