The ‘250%’ in the title comes from the Chinese slang ‘erbaiwu’, which means ‘idiot’ or ‘dope’. Four bloated and grotesque bald figures resembling decaying flesh sit against a dark background, giving off an eerie vibe. The rest of the canvas is covered in grey-white scribbles of the English phrase ‘born 1989 in Beijing’. Between the lines are glimpses of infant toys, dismembered limbs, and unidentified objects. The work depicts the mental states of Liu and his post-1989 generation in a period of transition from destruction to reconstruction.
