Sensou-gara, or wartime patterns, were popular in Japan from the 1890s until the end of Second World War. This child’s kimono is decorated with imagery that is often associated with Japanese imperialism, including rising-sun flags as lanterns and views of the Niju Bridge in Tokyo leading to the Imperial Palace. This type of kimono was seen as an auspicious fashion item and sold widely. The design reflects patriotic fervour amongst the public at the beginning of the last century.
