‘The body language of the Chinese is very subtle … People's mental state [after the Cultural Revolution] seems to have relaxed all of a sudden.’ —Liu Heung Shing
These seven photos were taken by Liu Heung Shing as a foreign correspondent in China when the country was opening up. The snapshots capture how people began to see themselves as individuals who could define their appearance and way of life. Many adopted modern concepts of beauty and style, such as perming their hair and getting cosmetic surgery, and Western fashion for different occasions. Society started to embrace self-expression and people became aware of their new role as consumers with the right to reshape their bodies.
