In this photograph, photojournalist Liu Heung Shing captured a man roller-skating freely on a university campus with his arms spread wide and his leg lifted towards the sky. Behind the skater stands the statue of Mao Zedong looking sternly into the distance. The composition creates a contrast between the two figures while amplifying the energy and optimism of the skater, who represents the new generation in China. This work is part of Liu’s China After Mao series, where he documented the everyday life of Chinese people after Mao’s death in 1976.
