Three asymmetrical hoops form one of the most distinctive features of this bright pink, off-shoulder shift dress with paisley print. Pierre Cardin started experimenting with rigid hoops from the 1980s onwards. To contrast with these stiff geometric elements, he affixed a black ribbon bow on the side of the hip where the hoops meet. As the wearer moves, the hanging tails of the ribbon would sway, creating an eye-catching fashion detail. In this photo, a model is showcasing this dress in the first edition of the Chinese International Clothing and Accessories Fair in 1993, representing Cardin who was invited to the event by the Chinese government.
