Desk, Cathay (Peace) Hotel suite上海華懋飯店(現為和平飯店)套房書桌
circa 1929
This desk belonged to a suite at the Cathay Hotel (now the Fairmont Peace Hotel) in Shanghai. Extending the Egyptian-influenced Art Deco design of the building, the desk’s pattern of triangles and swirls evokes the Pyramids and the Nile. The hotel was built in 1929 amid the influx of foreign capital and tourists that defined Shanghai’s quasi-colonial condition. Once renowned as ‘the first skyscraper of the Far East’ and distinguished by its copper-coated pyramid-like top, the hotel building is an iconic design by the Hong Kong–based firm Palmer and Turner, which built extensively in the region and helped shape the skyline of Shanghai.
