The communist symbol of the hammer and sickle caught Andy Warhol’s attention on a trip to Italy in 1975. Back in New York, he bought the two tools from a hardware shop on Canal Street and began to use them as the subject of photographic compositions that led to screen prints. In 1977, Warhol signed the hammer and sickle, turning the mass-produced objects into works of art.
