Illuminated from within, this ornate object folds out into fourteen drawers and two hidden compartments. Twisting Baroque columns are placed next to steps that refer to Greek and Roman architecture. At the centre, a rock reminiscent of a shanshui landscape is flanked by trapezoidal skyscrapers and mural motifs derived from Aztec and Maya art. The dizzying combination of forms reflects the unique trajectory of Po Shun Leong’s life. To make his intricate treasure boxes, the architect-turned-sculptor draws extensively from his experiences living in and travelling to Mexico, Italy, and France over the past four decades.
