Born in Fujian and based in Paris from 1948 until his death in 1991, T’ang Haywen received no formal artistic training, but defined an innovative practice over the course of his career. He developed a signature diptych style using Kyro card—paper originally meant for X-ray prints that has an ideal capacity to absorb ink. Naissance du dragon (Birth of the dragon) demonstrates the diptych format, T’ang’s skill with fluid line, and his interest in calligraphy. Its lyrical composition conjures the speed, motion, and ambiguity of the dragon’s form with wisps and wet pools of black. T’ang strove to materialise forces of nature on paper and combined wet and dry brush techniques. The work was included in the 1989 exhibition Tiananmen, je n’oublie pas at the Centre Pompidou, responding to the events that took place in Tiananmen Square earlier that year. Blending Eastern and Western traditions, T’ang signed the work in cinnabar red using the Latin alphabet.
