Zhang Hai’er belongs to a generation of Chinese avant-garde artists active in the mid-1980s. Although he studied painting, Zhang developed an eye for photography and drew acclaim for his personal explorations of the city and unconventional portraits of women. His images tend towards low-light settings with inky blacks and careful use of lighting and diagonals to create dynamic effects.
