Thangkas are Tibetan Buddhist mineral-pigment paintings created for meditation and worship. Using oil paint, Zheng Guogu painted complementary colours over a thangka depicting the Buddhist deity Blue Tara. The result is a pulsating optical effect that seems to enhance the power of the icon. One might interpret the act of painting over a religious image as sacrilege. However, Zheng sees this as a way to explore the flow of energy between the spirit and the body.

About the Maker:

Zheng Guogu (born 1970, Yangjiang) graduated from the Printmaking Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1992. A key member of the Yangjiang Group, he creates conceptual work in the form of photography, calligraphy, painting, and video installation. His work addresses the profound shifts of southern Chinese culture, specifically the Pearl River Delta region, with a particular focus on local culture in a time of globalisation. Zheng lives and works in Yangjiang.
