Rirkrit Tiravanija’s conceptualist installations carry meanings that can be nuanced or elliptical and that are based on a wide variety of shifting associations. Here, the artist records himself saying the word ‘boom’ and plays the recording on two televisions that face each other upon a table with a chrome-polished surface, a recurring material in his practice. The televisions sit extremely close, creating an accelerated ‘echo’: ‘boomboom not boom boom’. This relationship is further echoed in the text-based painting on the wall nearby. Situated within Tiravanija’s artistic practice, which frequently explores the social role of the artist and the formation of close-knit communities through relationships and participation, Untitled 2009 (boomboom not boom boom) expresses his inclination towards spoken communication and towards exchanges in close proximity rather than at a distance.
