This is Balinese painter I Ketut Tagen’s depiction of a geodesic dome as a woven bamboo structure in a tropical forest. The dome was championed by the futurist R. Buckminster Fuller as a means of achieving maximum volume using the fewest elements. Tagen witnessed the building of a bamboo dome in Bali during the Campuan World Meetings, organised by Malaysian architect Lim Chong Keat and the visiting Fuller. With participants from around the world, the meetings provided a space for multidisciplinary thinking and exchange. The painting documents how Fuller’s geometric concepts can resonate globally and can be continually reframed by local contexts and materials.
